To be called one of Africa's greatest football players and virtually a god in his native Nigeria, it is but natural for football fans to know what Jay-Jay Okocha's Top 10 goals are. Born Augustine Azuka Okocha, Jay-Jay was best known for his astounding dribbling prowess and his spellbinding techniques in the pitch. With a career Africa to Europe, Okocha has managed to amass mesmerizing goal after mesmerizing goal from his native soil and crossing over to Europe.
Enugu Rangers against BBC Lions. As if to announce his official entry into the world of professional football, Okocha made his debut with his hometown Enugu Rangers going up against the more accomplished BBC Lions. Making an astonishing move through a phalanx of defenders, Okocha maneuvered the ball and made a goal against the experienced William Okpara as if to say "It's my time now".
Eintracht Frankfurt against Karlsruhe. Oliver Kahn was not nicknamed King Kahn for nothing. But during a game pitting Kahn's Karlsruhe against Okocha's Frankfurt, Okocha made it look easy against the Kahn's defense. Okocha displayed dazzling dribbling skills in the penalty box area before firing in a winner against three Karlsruhe players and Kahn. The goal was unanimously selected Goal of the Season by numerous publications.
Fenerbahçe against Galatasaray. Just when Okocha's reputation as a killer midfielder was gaining widespread attention in football circles, he upped his skills to another level, scoring 30 goals in 60 appearances for Turkish club Fenerbahçe. It was on full display against Galatasaray when it looked as if he magically wove the ball from a corner free kick just enough for it to slip past the Galatasaray goalie's outstretched arms.
PSG against Bordeaux. In his first game with new club PSG, Okocha immediately made his presence felt. Weaving his way past Bordeaux defenders and finding himself just a few feet past the midfield, Okocha powered in a rocket-propelled ball past the goalkeeper's helpless hands and safely into the goal's nets.
Bolton against West Hamm. The Bolton Wanderers were already well aware of what Okocha was capable of delivering. And deliver he did against West Hamm when he found himself in an open field with minimal defenders. He didn't wait to dribble nearer the box; he upped and decided and fired in a laser sighted goal that earned the nod as the Best Premier Goal of 2008.
Bolton against Aston Villa. Displaying his uncanny prowess once more in a free kick situation, Okocha was given the reigns by Bolton to emphasize their mastery over Aston Villa. With defenders bunching up on the left and right flanks of the goal, Okocha not only challenged such a defense but outsmarted it as he managed to fire the ball to the goal's nets with inches to spare from it hitting the bars.
Nigeria against Algeria. Showing everyone his nerves of steel with his Nigerian team trailing 1-0 against Algeria, Okocha scored a marvelous direct free kick for the equalizer that proved to be the catalyst to their 4-1 eventual victory.
Nigeria against Cameroon. In the 2000 African Cup finals, Okocha immortalized his presence as the greatest Nigerian midfielder when he willed his home country to a silver medal finish including a brilliant penalty shot in the final against Cameroon which unfortunately was not enough to win them the championship.
Nigeria against Cameroon. In a 2004 rematch in the African Cup quarterfinals, Okocha was again at the forefront of the Nigerian attack which featured his incredible conversion of none other than a free kick against a hapless goalkeeper. This not only sealed his enshrinement as the best player in the tournament but also a joint Golden Boot award for the talented Nigerian.
Nigeria against African Select. In perhaps a fitting closure to his colorful career, Jay-Jay Okocha closed it out by scoring on the marginal goal for Nigeria's 2-1 victory against an African Select team in Warri during his career testimonial. Perhaps, the man who they say "is so good they named him twice - Jay-Jay" wanted to go out in style, and what better way than to do what he does best, score.
